Lipids in Health and Disease
April 2010

Carotid endarterectomy involves removal of inner lining of carotid artery formed by deposition of plaque on inner side due to atherosclerosis. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is an Unusual Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid present in our diet (meat and dairy products) which is catabolized in peroxisomes by β-oxidation Whereas Isoprostanes (IP) are produced as a result of free radical catalyzed peroxidation of fatty acids, and IPs are further catabolized in peroxisomes via multiple pathways.
In this study, the authors have analysed the CLA and IP status in samples taken from patients undergoing the surgery. The authors conclude from the study that lipid peroxidation damage occurring during or after the surgery can be effectively controlled by manipulating endogenous peroxisomal β-oxidation as compared to antioxidant therapy.

Retinal degeneration is one of the main cause of sight loss in peroxisome disorder patients.  DHA (Docosahexanoic acid) levels are very low or virtually absent in tissues like retina in patients with PBD like adrenoleukodystropy. This study involved treatment of patients with DHA ethyl ester (DHA-EE) and the recovery of visual perception was investigated by the authors.
